I don't know why but this site is practically dead. No progress, no development, you can also see no activity here on this forum. I have many sales every month on other marketplaces. I had last sale half year ago here on 3DE. So I decided to delete most of my models here - it gives no sense to upload other models - only wasting of my time.
Why no sale why no sale... with an incredibly diverse selection of at least a 100 items you're gonna have decent traffic and consequently sales. A dozen very specific jewelry models is... a very niche thing to begin with and has an infinitely saturated market.
Development of 3DExport is... overall the handling of this site is very strange indeed, but it does work. The users themselves seem to be so very indifferent to anything, i personally made the item star rating / review feedback system work after all these years because nobody else took the time to keep on kicking customer support to get to work on it & supply them with sufficient debugging feedback.
Once your items are up, it isn't like you do actual effort for them to stay up so i don't get the wasting time aspect. Maybe if you want to achieve an exclusive seller status on an other website, but time, what time?
OK maybe there is some small development but from some mysterious reason the traffic of this site is very low compared with other well known marketplaces (you can compare it on sites like "google trends" or similarweb.com). Official 3DE facebook page is also not so active (last post from december 2020).
On the other site I think that 3DE has good models publisher, fair 60% royalty rate, nice product page look. So I see some positives here. But what about the site popularity? It would probably need much more to be done. Maybe bigger development team, some investors, maybe better models sorting, I don't know.
And about the wasting of time - maybe it was not well written. Rather I have no motivation to upload more models here. But I will wait and stay here with few models which were sold at least once. And maybe the future will be better. :-)
But to be fair - the bigger and bigger competition is overall problem and it is harder to sell models every other year. Customers requirements on models quality are also increasing and overall models prices are decreasing every other year. And back to "redvelvet" question. I agree that jewelry is very specific category and one of the most competitive. Probably very hard to succeed in this niche. So the portfolio diversification is good way to think about.
The jewelry thing is a mystery to me to be honest, 99% of the time i see those extremely samey, and very specific looking rings by the thousands, they look like they are coming from a ring generator script. But I just cannot see how that would come up as a need for anyone, to have complicated rings on a character that are of someone else's design. It is such a small item, and if is important, will be featured actually in focus, it will be designed from scratch for the project, not picked off the shelf. It is just overall not a good idea to try to sell highly project specific, or "design driven" for the lack of a better word (or my English) items , stuff that are clearly off someone else's project that had its clear distinct art direction. Buyers on sites like this mainly look for either exact replicas of existing popular characters or tools / vehicles, and customizable building blocks of again either characters or terrain/vehicles/machinery.
Yeah 3DE itself doesn't really do much for the popularity of each actual item, i suspect that those strange "link-only" 3d market place lookalikes, and individuals linking stuff on their blogs/social whatevers are the main driving force for any really well viewed items on here. Oh and Google, especially their image search. At least i tend to vision a clear connection between being at an elegant place on Google's image search and my biggest sellers.
To the outside 3DEs communication and PR looks absolutely dead i agree but believe me they have a real decent and competent support staff. With clearly not enough people, but i've always got my questions answered and my problems fixed within a couple days in the worst. At least they deal with inquiries in-house, eBay for example can shove their outsourced super Indian very script driven support system right up.
Tell me about it, 3d is getting easier to do / automatized & being outsourced to mid-Asia (by all means go Asian people woohoo, but not at 1/10th of the freakin price will you... that is just stupid) at a terrifying rate, i've had the exact same financial success with one superstar item (priced insanely) five years ago, as today with almost a hundred. Probably a good thing this is just one of the many pieces of iron i'm holding into the fire.
Yes I believe that the stuff is competent - I have no experience, I never had any problem. And I Agree that the globalisation and outsorcing to some cheaper countries can have negative impact on prices and models selling is now much less profitable than 5 yeas ago. So I wish to everybody doing as well as possible.
